Media Nationals Unit 3 Level 2
Introduction to Media Production Evaluation.
For Unit 3 we created a music video for the song ‘Feel The Love’ by Rudimental.
In the duration of the unit I discovered things that I was strong at, and also some things I wasn’t as good at. I felt that I was particularly good at using digital media, I felt confident using the camera and using various settings on the camera. I was good at editing the shots, applying effects and selecting the clips from shots that we should use. I also think I was good at creating ideas towards the video of things we could record and the storyline we would create and being open minded. On the occasion that we lost our footage I felt that I was good at empathising with the other members who were also upset by reminding them that it wasn't our fault but fault of the camera which destroyed the tape.
However I feel I wasn’t as good at communicating with the rest of the group and being organised, which may of lead to our group missing some deadlines due to poor planning of the video and changing our ideas as we find what works and what doesn't work with our video and the impression we want to create. We also could've been better at using the editing software ‘Final Cut’ however I don’t feel it was a great issue as we only lacked knowledge of a couple of things.
At the start of the process we decided to take the time to research the artist and view other videos of his by getting an idea of the type of videos he creates to give us ideas. We listened to the song repeatedly until we thought of ideas of what the song implies to us. We then incorporated the ideas we had to create the video and plan. The initial beginning of the video was going well and we were determined to try our best to achieve. As we begun to film we were initially doing well, we begun to gather together some successful footage that we were looking forward to using, however we also realised we didn’t have enough ideas for the video and had to think quick of what else to put in, in order to reach the deadlines successfully. We eventually got all of our clips together and recorded the final minutes of the video, however the ending footage film was destroyed by the camera so we lost a large part of the video, which put us at a difficulty in creating our video. We then accepted that the deadline for filming was up but we were able to work with what we had and make a successful video. The editing process began and we managed to achieve what we wanted to, we had help from Spencer as we weren't too confident with the editing software however we did not rely on him for everything, only things we didn’t know how to do ourselves. In the end we got the grasp of the software. If we were to create the video again then I would’ve liked us to be more organised and more creative, and spend more time dedicated to making the video the best it could be.
We wanted our video to have an urban theme so we set the colour to black and white which we felt made the video look a lot cleaner and more consistent. We used the speed change to our advantage by making the video change with the beat in order to emphasise the rhythm. We used a montage in our video, by inserting related images to show and symbolise relationships. We also tried to vary our shots to make it more interesting, we used low shots, high shots, closeups, distant shots and tried to record from different angles. We used continuity to make the video consistent by fading in and out at the beginning and the end.
