Emma Pilling Unit 3 Evaluation

Media Nationals Unit 3 Level 2
Introduction to Media Production Evaluation.

For Unit 3 we created a music video for the song ‘Feel The Love’ by Rudimental.
In the duration of the unit I discovered things that I was strong at, and also some things I wasn’t as good at. I felt that I was particularly good at using digital media, I felt confident using the camera and using various settings on the camera. I was good at editing the shots, applying effects and selecting the clips from shots that we should use. I also think I was good at creating ideas towards the video of things we could record and the storyline we would create and being open minded.  On the occasion that we lost our footage I felt that I was good at empathising with the other members who were also upset by reminding them that it wasn't our fault but fault of the camera which destroyed the tape.
However I feel I wasn’t as good at communicating with the rest of the group and being organised, which may of lead to our group missing some deadlines due to poor planning of the video and changing our ideas as we find what works and what doesn't work with our video and the impression we want to create. We also could've been better at using the editing software ‘Final Cut’ however I don’t feel it was a great issue as we only lacked knowledge of a couple of things.

At the start of the process we decided to take the time to research the artist and view other videos of his by getting an idea of the type of videos he creates to give us ideas. We listened to the song repeatedly until we thought of ideas of what the song implies to us. We then incorporated the ideas we had to create the video and plan. The initial beginning of the video was going well and we were determined to try our best to achieve.  As we begun to film we were initially doing well, we begun to gather together some successful footage that we were looking forward to using, however we also realised we didn’t have enough ideas for the video and had to think quick of what else to put in, in order to reach the deadlines successfully. We eventually got all of our clips together and recorded the final minutes of the video, however the ending footage film was destroyed by the camera so we lost a large part of the video, which put us at a difficulty in creating our video. We then accepted that the deadline for filming was up but we were able to work with what we had and make a successful video. The editing process began and we managed to achieve what we wanted to, we had help from Spencer as we weren't too confident with the editing software however we did not rely on him for everything, only things we didn’t know how to do ourselves. In the end we got the grasp of the software. If we were to create the video again then I would’ve liked us to be more organised and more creative, and spend more time dedicated to making the video the best it could be.

We wanted our video to have an urban theme so we set the colour to black and white which we felt made the video look a lot cleaner and more consistent. We used the speed change to our advantage by making the video change with the beat in order to emphasise the rhythm. We used a montage in our video, by inserting related images to show and symbolise relationships. We also tried to vary our shots to make it more interesting, we used low shots, high shots, closeups, distant shots and tried to record from different angles. We used continuity to make the video consistent by fading in and out at the beginning and the end.

In terms of legal or ethical we clearly stated that the footage would only be used for our video and asked for permission from all of the people that were starred in the film. We did use other videos for inspiration however did not copy any of their footage.

During Unit 3 we worked as a team to make a music video for Rudimental- Feel the Love. I found working in a group hard if not everyone was willing to participate but when everyone worked together it worked well. I like working in a team because i feel i have everyones help, but when I work independently I find i can focus better because there are not as many distractions.
My strengths towards the team were to make everything fair by giving each member of the team have an equal amount of work, I tried to use integrity and take control of all work that needed to be done so that the group didn’t get too far behind. I’ve been trying to be persistent with work and keep it up to date and i worked independently and was very self-motivated and worked without the constant help from my teacher.
During the unit i found my weakness showed when I worked in a team with other members that were not getting on with work, i found it hard to have to do other work because others had not completed it. At first I wasn't good at using 'Final Cut' to edit the video, but after using  it and learning different techniques together as we went along, as a team we got to grips with the program and were able to use it productively. Our team got behind with work, but we were all willing to put in time to finish our part of the work, we tried to get our work sorted and reach the deadlines.

At the start of the Unit when our group was researching, we worked well to look at other videos and get ideas and inspiration, when we were planning our music video we had loads of ideas and all contributed well and worked well as a team. I am pleased with our final product and i think the editing that took a while to do, finally worked out well. We took a lot of time filming and this was important that we did so we had the important shots we needed. However near the end, after we thought we had filmed all the footage we wanted, our camera broke and a large chunk of our film was lost. With the film we had, we were able to work with it and edit what we had. The biggest problem we had was our project took a lot of time to do, since we were put behind filming more film that we had lost. Whilst some members of our team were editing the video and getting on with finishing our final product, others of us got on with thinking of any other shots we needed and making a shot list. We made good use of our time and took regular meetings about our project in and out of the classroom.

In our video we made all of it black and white because it went with our theme of a retro, urban look to the music video, we also wanted to use black and white to make the video consistent. We used many effects, some were to speed parts up because it fit the beats in the song.We used montage in our video, where we chose a collection of symbolically related images and cut them together to show psychological relationships within the video. When shooting our video we tried to get different angles to make the video more interesting. We used close ups and wide shots and a establishing shot was used at the end of the video to provide a view of all the space which the action is happening. We used techniques of continuity editing for example, a fade-out to start and end our video. Since we lost some of our film was lost, when we had a chance to film a little extra film the uniform our actors were wearing was not the same, this caused continuity in our video but we were able to disguise our mistake with a montage of film.

In terms of legal or ethical terms i have explained clearly to all involved in the video that footage we filmed wouldn't be used for anything but the music video allowing us to use the music track. To make our video work well we looked at other music videos but to make it original we changed the ideas and made it our own. We had permission from all the members featured in our video that we could use any film they are in.

Emily France Unit 3 Evaluation

Media Nationals Unit 3 Level 2
Introduction to Media Production
Evaluation

In unit 3 me and my group emma, olivia and alice made a music video to
'Rudiment - Feel The Love' We had strengths and weakness. Our weakness were that
we easily got distracted in our work because we are all friends so it is easy to get
doing other things. Also i think another weakness was that we could of been a lot more
organized. I think that my own weakness was when it came to working on the editing
program I didn't really understand how to use it at first but then i got the hang of it. I think
as a group our strengths were when it came to using the camera and all the equipm
ent because
we were all confident of how to use it, we had used cameras plenty of times before. I think
my own strength was when it came to putting ideas together I tried my best to come up
with creative ideas on what we could do to make it better.
distracted

I think that the end product of our video was quite good because we kept trying our
best to change different things and put our ideas together to come up with ways to
improve the video. I think we still could of improved a lot of things, because quite a
lot of our footage was lost so we captured some more clips which weren't as good but
worked within the video, so I think if we had the first set of footage our video
would of
been
a lot better. I think our group was good at working together because although we
were easily distracted we all had our own roles for example Emma was good
at using final cut and me and olivia worked well in putting ideas together and
alice was also good at editing the video on final cut. We had a series of meetings
to put ideas together and we also watched a few videos on YouTube to give
us some good ideas that we could use when it came to filming footage
and editing the video.

I think my favorite technique that we used in the video was when we got a clip of
a train and we edited different parts of the clip together to make it look as if
the train was going back and fourth going to the beat of the music
that was personally my favorite technique that we used. But we also used simple
techniques such as cropping the clips and rotating them instead of having
unwanted items or people in the background such as school bags, train railings
and even the side of people, by cropping the clip and rotating it,it made our Music
Video look more professional. On some of our clips we added the effect of Black and
white which made our Music Video look a lot better because it fitted more into
the Song that we used and made the Music Video more interesting. Finally another technique
we used was putting a flash into where the song started properly where the
beat dropped in, it made the music video seem more interesting and before
we added it our video looked a bit dull but by adding the flash it shows
that we don't just take notice in adding clips to a song we listen to where
the beat kicks in and adds the flash showing that we understand how
to make our music video more interesting. By using these different techniques it shows
how we are confident at using the editing program
instead of just putting unedited video clips onto the Backing song of 'Rudimental
Feel The Love'

Our Music Video was Copyright because all the video clips we used we filmed ourselves
and we asked for permission to video everybody we used, and finally because our
Music Video was for educational purpose we were aloud to use to Track from YouTube
of Rudimental - Feel The Love'

Olivia Halliwell-Williams Unit 3 Evaluation

Media Nationals Unit 3 Level 2
Introduction to Media Production
Evaluation
By Olivia Halliwell-Williams.

1. During unit 3 we worked together as a team to make a music video for the song ‘feel the love’ by Rudimental. Our weaknesses were not knowing how to use final cut and being able to edit the clips we recorded. However we were determined to improve our skills therefore we used the help of Spencer (special projects worker). We all put an equal amount of effort into creating our music video. We worked well to get all the paperwork done for this unit and split it equally between all of us so we all put our own part to the work in the video and paperwork. I think we was slightly disorganised and the reason was because the first time we went out we did not have a list of shots. When we next went out with the camera we have a shot list so we knew what we were looking to record.  Other people have stated that i bring a nice atmosphere to the group by always being upbeat and seeing the positive in the problems we came across. For example on the numerous occasions that our footage was lost i attempted to make people feel better by pointing out we have extra time.

2. I am pleased with the outcome of our video i particularly liked the transactions that took place in the video. I enjoyed making the video and met our aim of making a music video However we lost a lot of our footage and the camera broke our footage. We also looked at other music videos in our group to get some ideas about the sort of music video we wanted. We managed with the footage we had. We then made our video to the best of our ability and we are happy with the outcome of the music video. I was good at suggesting ideas towards the video but if i had the chance to edit the footage for the music video i would struggle as i am not very familiar with ‘final cut’. I kept my role and gave my input as much as i could towards the music video. I would like to get better at using ‘final cut’ but the role of the editor is good at what she does as she know’s how to use ‘final cut’ which is good for the group and we are all willing to learn how to use final cut at a high level of use. At the start of unit 3 we planned how we wanted our video to look with a mood board and shot list. This is because we wanted to know what we was going to shot when we went out recording. Also we was very organised at the start of the unit as we wanted to get on with our recording.

3. In the music video we made part of our video black and white as we liked this effect on our video. We think that this effect makes the video look very retro. This is the look we wanted for our video as it was quite an urban area we recorded the footage in. In some parts of the video we speeded up certain footage like with the dancing we speeded that up to make it look more effective with the dancing. Also when we recorded the train we speeded up up and made it go back and forth on the train lines. This look’s very good in our video. We did this as it stands out. After that we watched our video over and over again then saw where else we could add things in and edit things in the video. We changed some of the transitions and also put 3 different types of recording into one shot but next to each other. This looked nice in the video and looked very professional. We wanted different transitions as this show’s of the good recording we have got and the editor in our group (emma) has shown off her skills on final cut.

4. In terms of legal or ethical terms i have discussed with the people who have been in our music video that the footage will not be used for anything other than the music video. Also all the footage we have recorded has been our groups own work. We have had some ideas from other music videos we looked at but we have changed the ideas slightly to make our footage unique.

Production Meeting No :3

Date : 25 June 2012

Group members present: Emily, Olivia, Emma, Alice.

Agenda

Meeting number 3

At the moment everyone is sticking to their roles to get the final shots together and begin editing them. We are all doing the same amount of work to try and ensure all outstanding tasks are completed. Although we have all been assigned particular roles to suit our strengths within the group - we have all been helping each other in all aspects to ensure everyone gets a say in each part of the production.

All of our members are group have good attendance to the times required to carry out the tasks, we are beginning to dedicate our lunchtimes also which is helping greatly.

The production is so far pretty spot on with the time that we hoped to have had the project finished by, we only have a few video clips to shoot which members of the group can do whilst others begin the editing. We have a few weeks left to complete the task and all written tasks have been completed
